How to Renew Iron Patio Furniture

One of the most fun ways to get new things for your yard is to buy them used and fix them up. Iron patio furniture is often available at garage and yard sales, thrift shops and online for cheap. It’s a little labor intensive to clean them up and make them beautiful, but these pieces can be made lovely again.
The first step to sprucing up your new furniture is to clean it really well. Use a wire brush to scrub away any rusty spots and chipping paint. This must be done very thoroughly for new paint to be secure.
You can even get a wire brush attachment for your power drill that makes the job go faster. Work until it’s smooth to the touch, trying to get as much of the old paint off as possible. Always wear a dust mask and goggles during this process, to prevent chips of paint getting in your eyes or being ingested.
Once you’ve finished cleaning the iron patio furniture thoroughly, it’s time to prime it. Due to the intricate nature of ironwork tables and chairs, spray paint is probably your best bet. Look for a primer that is specifically meant for the job you’re doing.
If you can’t find exactly the right thing, ask for help from one of the knowledgeable salespeople. Follow the directions on the can closely, and be sure to do the work outside, where you won’t be inhaling as many fumes. Of course, you should wear a mask as well.
There are many kinds of paint you can use for the final finish on your new furniture. You can find glossy spray paint in dozens of colors. Go with white or black for a traditional iron look, or if you want something more striking, choose a bright red or other fun color.
There are textured spray paints available, too, if you want something a little different. These can provide sandy finishes, or bumpy finishes. You could also use a matte finish for a little bit different look. However you decide to refinish your new old iron patio furniture, it is sure to make a statement!
